Fertiliser planning to mitigate margin pressures

Against this year's background of pressure on margins, planning ahead to maximise the effectiveness of fertilisation programmes is near the top of many farmers' agendas.

Switch to liquid

Switching to liquids is certainly one way of improving efficiency. The nutrients in liquid fertiliser are immediately available to the plant through its roots or leaves, leading to a faster response. Equally the speed of plant uptake enables nutrient deficiencies to be corrected quickly.

Liquid fertilisers can be more precisely applied than solids and the much wider booms save time and minimise wheel damage. Applying liquid fertiliser with a sprayer becomes a one man operation. Liquids can also be applied in irrigation systems further saving manpower. Read more.

Maximise the N impact

Any crop benefits most from the first dose of nitrogen applied – for wheat 160kg/ha generates the greatest yield boost and for oilseed rape it's 200kg/ha as this chart shows.

Therefore the first application this spring will be key and using BFS NitroSulph's superior form of sulphur means it is available to plants for longer.

Then, when the leaf canopy is established, BFS PolyNPlus Foliars will provide the crop with a highly efficient application as the chart below shows.
