With margins being squeezed it is vital to maximise nutrient use efficiency – and get the highest yield response from every kg of fertiliser applied.
Any crop benefits most from the first dose of nitrogen applied, as shown by the chart below. Therefore, the first application of nitrogen this spring will be key. Using BFS NitroSulph with added sulphur at this stage will give the crop a good supply of the nutrients for the important early spring growth. Later applications give less overall boost to yield at a diminishing rate. So 160 kg/ha for wheat and 200 kg/ha for oilseed rape will give you the biggest yield boost.

But Liebig's Law of the Minimum states that plant growth is limited by the essential nutrient in the shortest supply, not the total amount of all nutrients. So, if any other essential nutrient is in short supply, then the crop will not respond as predicted to applied nitrogen and yield will be compromised. It would be pertinent to check other major nutrients are not limiting before top dressing gets under way. If phosphate or potash are below critical levels then these require correcting too.
The BFS NitroSulph range of liquid fertiliser solutions contains a superior sulphur source that features both quick and slow release components. This sulphur source has a mobilising effect on phosphate and manganese, making these nutrients more easily available to the crop. We can also add phosphate to NitroSulph to correct any significant deficiencies. Therefore BFS NitroSulph with added nutrients will give you every chance of maximising your crop yields this season.
Then, when the leaf canopy is established, apply high nitrogen use efficiency BFS PolyNPlus Foliars to provide a controlled release of nitrogen in a form much more easily absorbed by the crop than traditional products. Using BFS PolyNPlus in combination with a co-ordinated programme of soil-applied nitrogen means that high yields can be achieved with less nitrogen.
